It is 1997. Harry Potter's seventh year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is well underway… or so, one would think.
At the start of July 1997, the Aurors that the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, positioned in Azkaban were found killed. Most of the Death Eaters that had been held captive, including Lucius Malfoy, had escaped. The Ministry’s efforts to contain the merciless deeds of the Dark Lord’s forces had little effect now that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named had become stronger and had nearly risen to the power he once possessed. The Order of the Phoenix has had to relocate its Headquarters and has had to find itself a new Secret-Keeper. They’ve seemingly plunged themselves into their duties and responsibilities; probably in an effort to avoid thinking of the death of a beloved member.
In the light of Albus Dumbledore’s death, Hogwarts had reopened for students and stood ready to provide them any means of comfort and safety. Many of the students had been prevented from continuing their schooling by their parents, especially those without pure blood or any desire to follow the Dark Lord. Minerva McGonagall, who was now Headmistress, took the responsibility of recruiting people to fill the open spots in the Hogwarts Staff. They needed a new Head of Gryffindor House, a new Transfiguration professor and yet another Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
Harry Potter turned seventeen at the end of the month and the spell that had protected him within the Dursleys’ walls was undone. He was no longer safe, even with blood relatives; not that he cared to stay with them any longer. The summer at the Dursleys had in fact, been bearable. Ron and Hermione had arrived at the Dursleys doorstep not long after their journey back to the Muggle world and kept Harry the company he needed.
Though Harry had all summer to form his resolution on never going back to Hogwarts, Ron and Hermione also had that time to convince him that it would be better to go back. Even members of The Order had lent Ron and Hermione a hand in convincing Harry. They felt that Hogwarts was at least a bit safer because of the number of witches and wizards that could help defend everyone else. His protests on finding the remaining Horcruxes were adamant but his friends were just as insistent. In the end, he gave in; after Ron and Hermione swore on their lives to help him find the Horcruxes, help him destroy them if need be and keep him on the right track in any case.
The three friends journeyed to Godric’s Hollow after presenting themselves at Bill and Fleur’s wedding at The Burrow. Ron and Hermione left Harry to his thoughts briefly when they came upon his parents’ graves. They’d wandered about Godric’s Hollow for a short while with Harry staying silent still and gathering his options. Harry took his Apparition test shortly after that and had immediately acquired his license. He’d since been practicing nonverbal spells with the thought of facing Snape and Voldemort in his determined mind.
Between worrying about homework, Quidditch, N.E.W.T.s, keeping an eye on the front page of The Daily Prophet, finding the Horcruxes, assisting The Order of the Phoenix and concerning himself with his friends’ welfare, Harry found comfort in the fact that his friends were always at his side, even as he embarked on a dark and dangerous path he wasn’t even sure it would really end.
